copy at the weather office. what we're hearing from the officials there is that airasia regularly did not pick up the copy. the other side of it, though, is that the same information is available online. and what airasia is saying is, yeah, we download it, we bring it to our operations centers and then it's printed out and brought to the pilots on board these flights. i'll read you a bit of a statement from airasia responding to all of this talk about how their pilots get weather information, from the president of airasia indonesia. quote, airasia indonesia receives and disseminates the weather report that comes from the exact same source as the hard copy version made available at the meteorological station. so they're basically saying, we've got the same information, we disseminate it in the same way and our pilots have access and can therefore plan the flight in the same way and safely. ashleigh?
>> miles, as we contemplate that, clearly other planes were taking off from that airport. it wasn't a ground stop. other planes thought it was safe enough to be flying. i want to go back to david molko. i think we've re-established our link to surabaya, indonesia. there's so much he-said, she-said going on between the airline and those claiming the pilots didn't physically go to an office and pick up a physical report before they got on the physical plane and took off. how are they actually categorizing this? >> reporter: pardon me for a second while i brush my forehead, it's a little buggy out here. this is the actual weather report from the weather office there. this is the information pilots would have had access to on the morning of december 28th. of course, as miles was mentioning and you were talking about, they did not pick up a
dispatchers who make that call. is that a problem that this was going on? >> let's talk about how it's done in the u.s. and europe first of all. any time you push back from a gate both your captain and a licensed dispatcher have signed off on that flight. and each can veto whether that flight occurs based on weather or any number of issues which might be in play. but certainly weather is the big one and each of them would study the weather, come to their own conclusion as to the best routing, whether it's wise to do the flight in the first place. whether they have a licensed dispatcher system like that in that part of the world i honestly don't know. but i do know this. they left two hours early which already that's unusual for what we're used to here in this part of the world. were they trying to beat some weather? if they were up early before the weather office opened maybe they went and got the weather by other means. what they were talking about is literally a face-to-face
