The abrupt closure of Quebec newspaper publisher Metro Media will end news coverage of local government in parts of the provinces two largest cities, media observers say.

"Its the end of hyperlocal coverage in Montreal and Quebec City. Theres going to be no coverage of borough councils."

The newspaper companys CEO blames Montreals decision to ban the Publisac.

Metro Media, which publishes nearly 20 local newspapers in the Montreal and Quebec City regions, is ceasing operations.

The union says it wants to negotiate "better working conditions and better wages."

The Coops de linformation (CN2i) said Wednesday it will stop printing weekly editions of six newspapers at the end of the year and cut about 100 positions, or about a third of its workforce.

The six newspapers had already dropped from daily to weekly, and will now publish only online.
