GUWAHATI: A delegation of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) visited Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at his office on May 20 and appealed not to conduct any eviction drive during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The appeal comes after; the state government conducted a massive eviction drive earlier this month in the char areas of Jamugurihat in
Sonitpur district which left several homeless.
According to reports, a vast area of the government land to the southern part of Jamugurihat had been encroached upon by illegal encroachers and nearly 20 families have constructed houses on the government land illegally which was later evicted.
Gogoi contested the election in absentia as he was in jail. He was arrested over sedition charges in 2019 during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. He was also accused of helping set up bases for the Maoists.
