The move comes ahead of assembly elections in West Bengal, may prove disadvantageous for ruling Trinamool Congress
Kolkata: In a worrisome development for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), an influential cleric of Furfura Sharif Dargah on Thursday floated a new political outfit - Indian Secular Front (ISF) - ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
TMC s senior leaders Subrata Bakshi, Partha Chaterjee, Firhad Hakim and the party s political strategist Prashant Kishor are expected to attend the meeting. Jangipur MLA Jakir Hossain confirmed to ET that all party MLAs and organisation heads from Murshidabad have been summoned to Kolkata for a meeting. Abbas Siddiqui of Furfura Sharif is not a factor here, neither is the AIMIM. The Congress-Left can take a few votes, But overall, Muslims are with us, Hossain said. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the most notable leader of the Congress in the state and a former central minister, is from this area.
The TMC has already begun its outreach here. Recently, the Murshidabad unit of the All India Imam-Muezzin and Social Welfare Organisation held a general meeting in which over 600 clerics discussed the need to elect a “secular and competent” party in Bengal. Senior TMC minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury was present at the meeting.

Hyderabad: Firebrand opposition MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday sought to corner the Central government over reports that China has constructed a village in a disputed area along the McMohan Line in Arunachal Pradesh.
Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), asked why was Prime Minister Narendra Modi silent on these reports of the Chinese having built a 101-home village inside Indian territory.
“The Chinese PLA is continuously occupying our territory in Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Sikkim. In Arunachal Pradesh, the map shows that place within Indian territory but the Chinese have constructed permanent structures there. Why s PM silent on Chinese occupation of Indian territory?” Owaisi asked.
