Place 1, 2 Abilene City Council candidates step up for votes

Place 1, 2 Abilene City Council candidates step up for votes The races for Places 1 and 2 on the Abilene City Council are overshadowed by big questions. Those include the reliability of the city s water supply in the wake of the February winter storm, further street and infrastructure improvements and calls for accountability. COVID-19, along with loss of sales tax revenue, has taken a toll on the city s budget, while talk of a 2022 bond election, with some big-ticket items floated, occurs at a time when many residents only now are seeing the potential for basic financial recovery. Some candidates say younger or different representation is needed on the council, while others tout experience and leadership in city matters as a prerequisite.

What the Abilene Reporter-News liked and disliked: We curd it right

1. Say Cheese! It was announced Friday that Great Lakes Cheese is coming our way, bringing more than 500 jobs and a local investment shy of $200 million with its packaging and distribution facility. Local leaders lined up to break the news, that actually came first virtually from Austin and Gov. Greg Abbott, with state Rep. Stan Lambert at his left and state Sen. Dawn Buckingham at his right. Hints of a big announcement started in the fall. As Abilene emerges from the economic challenges of the pandemic, this is great news in moving forward. One more thing - Abbott promised to attend the ribbon-cutting event and wear a cheesehead. With a governor s race coming in 2022, that will a great photo op.
