Brandy and Kevin Smith, of Sylvania, share their family s journey and son’s recent diagnosis of the most common tick-borne disease in the U.S., Lyme disease. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia Burgdorferi and rarely, Borrelia mayonii. It’s transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the joints, the heart and the nervous system.

Interest in hemp production in Alabama has been growing for several years, initially spurred by the passage of our state’s 2018 Farm Bill that removed it as a controlled substance.   Still, while the legalization of industrial hemp has led many producers to explore the crop for several different products, its production throughout the state remains relatively new. (This year marks the third growing season.) That means researchers still are developing best practices and recommendations.  Additionally, while entirely distinct from industrial hemp, the recent passage of the medical marijuana law that created the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission and started the state down the path to legal medical cannabis, has continued to increase the profile of hemp production.  

Etowah County to host first ever Tomato Taste-Off

Etowah County will be hosting its inaugural tomato tasting contest, where local farmers and “tomato masters” will be able to showcase the work they have put into their plants. The Tomato Taste-Off will be held July 24 at the 5th Street Market and will begin with registration at 8 a.m. “There are other counties that have a tomato tasting competition each year, and we want to being it to our county so that we can show off our local community tomato growers,” said Etowah County Extension Coordinator Eric Wright. “A lot of growers come to the Master Gardeners extension sale and buy plants each year, so we know they are gonna turn good plants as well.”
