The number of COVID-19 cases in Allegheny County continues to drop as vaccinations continue.
According to Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Debra Bogen, the daily average case rate is about 130. Most recently, there were fewer than 100 cases a day, something that hasn’t happened since Oct. 12, 2020.
At the same time, the percentage of vaccinated residents continues to increase. About 72% of the adult population has received at least one shot, with 52% of the population fully vaccinated.
“I am hopeful we can keep the numbers heading in the right direction, especially as we approach May 31 and the lifting of all mitigation orders except for the mask mandate in the state of Pennsylvania,” Bogen said Wednesday.

StateImpact Pennsylvania US Steel recently canceled more than $1 billion in planned upgrades to its Mon Valley plants.
The news was first announced to a room full of workers, politicos, and media. US Steel was spending over $1 billion to upgrade its steel plants in western Pennsylvania.
But two years later, on an April 30 earnings call, CEO David Burritt announced the company had made a “difficult choice”: it was scrapping the upgrade plan after all.
Burritt said the Mon Valley project was a casualty of the company’s pledge to become carbon neutral by 2050.
“We aspire to be part of the solution. Achieving this goal won’t be easy,” Burritt said.

Vaccinations
In Pennsylvania, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 67.5% (6,861,865) of the state’s adult population has at least one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna covid vaccine or the one-shot Johnson & Johnson. The number of adults that are fully vaccinated stands at 4,962,018 (48.8%).
Gov. Tom Wolf has said the state’s mask mandate would be lifted when the adult population’s full inoculation level reaches 70%. Until then, Pennsylvania’s universal face covering order remains in effect, meaning unvaccinated individuals, including children, must still comply with the order. The CDC’s updated masking guidance says that fully vaccinated individuals (those two weeks removed from their final dose) may choose not to wear a mask, unless a business or organization, such as a school, requires that added layer of protection.
