Medical officer of health gives update on state of the pandemic

November 17, 2020 By Nate Smelle Last week, Ontario’s science advisory table released its most recent projections detailing the state of the pandemic across the province. This new scientific modelling indicated that if no further action is taken to flatten the curve, by mid-December the province could see up to 6,500 new cases of COVID-19 each day. In light of this recent development, The Bancroft Times reached out to Hastings Prince Edward Public Health’s medical officer of health and CEO, Dr. Piotr Oglaza. The following is a collection of excerpts from the conversation between Dr. Oglaza and The Bancroft Times reporter, Nate Smelle.

Covid infections – Wellington Legion

Several COVID-19 cases have been linked to the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Wellington. Hastings Prince Edward Public Health says it’s doing contact tracing.  Anyone who was at the Wellington Legion  between Nov. 30 and Dec. 18 are considered to be potential high-risk exposure candidates.   Public health says those who attended the legion on those dates must self-isolate – and get tested for the virus as soon as possible.

Jump in new COVID-19 cases in Ottawa and one new death

  OTTAWA Ottawa Public Health says 48 more people in Ottawa have tested positive for COVID-19 and one more person has died. Ottawa has been posting relatively low numbers compared to other large urban centres in Ontario, but Wednesday s report is a notable jump from the 16 new cases Ottawa Public Health reported on Tuesday. Across Ontario, there are 2,408 new cases and 41 new deaths. There are 629 new cases in Toronto, 448 in Peel, 234 in Windsor-Essex County, 190 in York Region and 150 in Hamilton, Ontario s lockdown regions. A provincewide lockdown begins at 12:01 a.m. Dec. 26. According to Ottawa Public Health s COVID-19 dashboard, there have been 9,448 total laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the city since the pandemic began.
