When she retired after 40 years of teaching, including 18 years at Crookshank Elementary School, reading specialist Joanne Marziani wanted to leave behind something special for the students. Her husband suggested she write a children’s book.
Marziani wanted to write a book that would fill an unmet need. She interviewed some of her struggling readers and asked them what they would like to read about and 90% said they would choose a book about football. When she researched children’s books about the sport, Marziani found there were plenty of football books written at a third-grade reading level or higher, but there were hardly any written on a first- or second-grade level.
“My husband told me his grandma bought these three lots,” Pasco recounted of the West King Street property. Robert was about five years old at the time. “He was born and raised here,” she explained.
It’s a little sketchy as to how the property transferred from her husband’s family, but when the Pascos moved to St. Augustine from Miami probably in the late 1980s, her husband found out the property was available and “he went out and got ’em,” said Pasco.
The three-bedroom, 2-story home is about 85 years old, Pasco estimated. Recently, thanks to the St. Johns Housing Partnership, the first floor received a face-lift. But the second story, where Hurston rented a room, is off limits, said Pasco, as it is unsafe.
