New Delhi, India – Scientists have found nickel in milk samples taken from an area in India where hundreds of patients fell sick with a mysterious disease a week ago.
More than 600 people in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru town fell ill, reporting nausea, seizures and fainting. Excessive amounts of lead and nickel were found in the blood samples of the patients.
One person died on December 7.
Two more patients admitted with symptoms of the disease died last week but local health officials said the deaths were not due to the “mystery illness” but other health complications.
A scientist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) revealed that nickel was found in milk samples collected in Eluru town.

VIJAYAWADA: Pesticides could be a reason for outbreak of the mysterious disease in Eluru. This emerged during a video conference Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had with experts from various fields. Incidentally, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) and other reputed institutions have confirmed that residues of pesticides could be the reason for such an outbreak.

While investigations continue to identify the cause of the sudden outbreak of the mysterious illness in Andhra Pradesh s Eluru, experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), after comparing test results from several institutions, have opined that organochlorine, substances found in pesticides, could be contributing to the cause of the spread of the disease.
Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Wednesday held a virtual meeting with representatives of various research institutes that conducted independent studies on the probable causes of the mysterious disease in Eluru last week.

Amaravati, Dec 17 (IANS): The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and other organizations on Wednesday have found that pesticide residues were the reason for the outbreak of the mysterious illness in Andhra Pradesh s West Godavari district headquarters Eluru, a state government statement said. The experts said a long term in-depth study is required to understand how these residues of pesticides entered the human body, it said.
Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has entrusted this responsibility to AIIMS, and the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT).
He held a video conference with experts on the mysterious illness.
