Despite being one of the wealthiest and most medically sophisticated countries in the world, the United States has an unacceptably high infant mortality rate of 5.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. Within the United States, Indiana ranks 42nd, losing more than 11 Hoosier babies each week.

Indiana adolescents ages 12 to 15 will be able to make an appointment for a vaccination as soon as 8 a.m. Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a federal committee issued a favorable recommendation on Wednesday.
