On Tuesday, the Salvation Army of Wake County began distributing toys and clothing to the families of close to 7,700 children. A massive line of cars snaked around the old Kmart parking lot on Fayetteville Road in Raleigh. Staci McKimmon never expected to be in this line. I just want my kids to have a great Christmas, so I had to put my pride aside and realize it s about my kids, she said. It was the first time McKimmon had registered for the Salvation Army Christmas Cheer program that gives toys and clothing to those in need.

NEW BEDFORD  Euridice Eury Peralta, 44, couldn t talk long about why she needs the help of the Salvation Army s Christmas assistance program. She was also helping three of her clients she serves as a CNA and home health aide to apply for the assistance, and they were waiting for her in the car. Peralta said she s worked as a CNA and Home Health aide for 16 years, but her earnings aren t enough to support her and her three kids. I work many hours, she said. But this helps a lot with food, clothing, checks to go to the supermarket and feed my family.

The annual distribution of Christmas parcels began yesterday after a service at the Salvation Army chapel on Melville Street, Kingstown. Distribution will end tomorrow and is spread over three days because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Persons were given tickets informing them of which day to collect the highly sought after packages.

Mackay families uncertain about Christmas in stressful year

Premium Content Many Mackay families are expected to experience greater levels of uncertainty this Christmas. Salvation Army corps officer Steve Spencer said people in Mackay have experienced some form of financial stress and everyone was affected by the situation in some way. “A person may not have the funds to spend which in turn means businesses and service providers experience less trade,” Mr Spencer said. He said there were many causes for financial stress. “We are currently seeing the culmination of multiple factors impacting our community,” he said. “Many of the non-government and government agencies are supplying the best of services with the limited resources.
