The money collected stays local and helps people in the area during Christmas and throughout the year. 14 News caught up with Salvation Army Major Mark Turner on Friday evening. He says they are still short by several thousand dollars, but if someone plans to donate in the near future, their contributions will go twice as far.

This year, amid covid-19, Major Glen Caddy of Salvation Army Kent County says; We are looking to serve more than 2,200 families during Christmas time, which is twice as many as we had last year. Those donations from the red kettle campaign will be used to support after school programs for kids, socialization and feeding programs for seniors, housing assistance for families, substance abuse programs, and emergency food pantries.

Salvation Army has financially assisted local nonprofit organizations and food pantries. We’ve helped supply diapers, car seats, frozen turkeys, food boxes and back-to-school items. We simply meet needs at the point of need.
