Snow begins to fall in the Tri-States, slick roads reported

QUINCY (WGEM) - Snow began falling in the Tri-States Tuesday morning shortly before 11 a.m. The National Weather Service had issued Winter Weather Advisory for Knox, Lewis and Shelby County in Missouri until 9 p.m. Tuesday. Snow falling in Canton Tuesday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect for until noon on Wednesday for Hancock and McDonough County in Illinois. An advisory for Lee County, Iowa, Scotland and Clark County, Missouri, was upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning on Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service attributed to upgrade to snow accumulations of one to two inches with three possible in some locations. and a higher ice accumulation forecast of .2 inches to .4 inches. The National Weather service also stated that heavy ice and gusty winds of 25 to 30 mph could cause tree limbs break and cause potential power outages in these areas.

According to statistics released by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police yesterday, 1,075 people have died on Illinois’ roadways this year compared to 972 at the same time a year ago. The statistics were released as a part of ISP and IDOT’s annual reminder of increased enforcement during the holidays. IDOT Spokesperson Paul Wappel says motorists should expect to see more state police checking for speeders, drunk drivers, and Scott’s law violators this year: “If you have to be out for the holidays, especially Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, please buckle up and drive sober.
