Clemson embarks on new era as member of Battelle Savannah River Alliance to manage SRNL

 E-Mail Clemson University will play a significant role in advancing the nation s environmental, energy, and national security research and workforce development efforts as a member of the Battelle Savannah River Alliance (BSRA) that will now manage the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). Clemson faculty have worked with scientists at SRNL for three decades to study solutions to nuclear waste storage, advanced materials, environmental protection and energy security. The long-standing relationship has resulted in numerous internships for Clemson undergraduate and graduate students who have had unique opportunities to conduct research with SRNL scientists and Clemson faculty. The new partnership is expected to bring even more opportunities.

The most popular 3D printing approach uses a solution of biological material or bioink that is loaded into a syringe pump extruder and deposited in a layer-by-layer fashion to build the 3D object. Gravity, however, can distort the soft and liquid bioinks used in this method.

New surgery may enable better control of prosthetic limbs

MIT researchers in collaboration with surgeons at Harvard Medical School have devised a new type of amputation surgery that can help amputees better control their residual muscles and receive sensory feedback. This restored sense of proprioception should translate to better control of prosthetic limbs, as well as reduction of limb pain, the researchers say.

Three UH engineers named to National Academy of Inventors

Hien Nguyen, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering; Jeffrey Rimer, Abraham E. Dukler Endowed Chair, William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; and Gangbing Song, Moores Professor of Mechanical Engineering, are among 61 academic inventors from around the country chosen for the prestigious honor for their remarkable innovation-producing technologies and growing success in patents, licensing and commercialization. This national distinction honoring the research and scholarship of Drs.
