Alonso became an iconic name in Formula 1 after bursting onto the scene in the early 2000s. Come 2005, he tasted World Championship glory for the first time as part of the Renault team, retaining the Drivers’ Championship in 2006 to become a two-time World Champion. Those remain the only titles of Alonso’s career, with future stints at McLaren, Ferrari and a Renault return failing to bring another World Championship.

Button started his career at Williams back in 2000, given his first drive in Formula 1 by Sir Frank Williams. From there, he went on to drive for Benetton, Renault, Honda, Brawn and McLaren, winning the World Championship with Brawn in 2009. With 15 Formula 1 race victories to his name, Button will now bring all his experience back to where it started after Williams appointed him as a special advisor ahead of the 2021 campaign.

Motor racing-Portugal replaces Sebring as WEC opener due to pandemic

The series, whose showpiece is the Le Mans 24 Hours in June, said an Eight Hours of Portimao race on April 2-4 would replace the 1,000 Miles of Sebring in March. “Due to the rapid evolution of coronavirus, as well as various changing directives from governments in different countries including travel restrictions, the WEC did not want to take any unnecessary risks,” it added in a statement.
