SwRI-led PUNCH mission launches associate investigator program

E-Mail SAN ANTONIO April 27, 2021 The Polarimeter to UNify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission has selected four early career scientists as associate investigators to pursue solar science under the mentorship of senior PUNCH science team members. Southwest Research Institute is leading PUNCH, a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) mission that will integrate understanding of the Sun s corona, the outer atmosphere visible during total solar eclipses, with the solar wind filling the solar system. The solar wind, a supersonic stream of charged particles emitted by the Sun, fills the heliosphere, the bubble-like region of space encompassing our solar system. Its boundary, where the interstellar medium and solar wind pressures balance, ends the sphere of the Sun s influence.

1st complete view of Venus orbital dust ring | Space

April 24, 2021 NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, currently studying the sun, has observed the entire dust ring that encircles the sun along Venus’ orbit. It is the first complete view of this dust band from any spacecraft. This isn’t some sort of flare – or glare – or any kind of jet or ray. It’s the first complete view of a ring of dust moving around the sun in the orbit of the planet Venus. The 4 frames of the image were first captured on August 25, 2019. Image via NASA/ Johns Hopkins APL/ Naval Research Laboratory/ Guillermo Stenborg and Brendan Gallagher. Did you know that Venus has a ring? Well, sort of. Not a ring of icy or dusty “moonlets” or grains like those surrounding the gas and ice giants in our solar system, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Instead, it’s a circumsolar ring of dust, that is, a ring of dust moving around the sun along Venus’ orbit. Now, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has sent back the first complete view of this ring, the space agency rep

Tactical drone, powered by solar panels and hydrogen fuel cell, flies 24h

By Garrett Reim2021-04-20T00:01:00+01:00 The US Naval Research Laboratory flew a Hybrid Tiger unmanned air vehicle (UAV) more than 24h in November 2020, its longest flight demonstrated. The electric UAV was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and solar panels on its wings, as well as using energy harvesting techniques, such as soaring on thermal updrafts, says the laboratory on 14 April. The demonstration took place at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. Source: US Navy Hybrid Tiger being launched with a winch system “The flight was effectively a performance test in worst-case conditions: temperatures falling below zero degrees Celsius, winds gusting to 20kt, and relatively little solar energy as we approached the solar solstice 21 December,” says Richard Stroman, a mechanical engineer from the Naval Research Laboratory Chemistry Division. “Despite all of that, Hybrid Tiger performed well.”
