Hoover Residents Nominated For Military Academy Admissions

Gary Palmer (R-Alabama) nominated several area students for admission into military academies this year, including students from Hoover High School and Spain Park High School. Hoover residents receiving nominations from Palmer include: James Broderick of Spain Park High School; U.S. Naval Academy Jonathan Chang of Hoover High School; U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy The Service Academy application process requires a nomination from the student s U.S. House Representative, U.S. Senator, the Vice President or the President. The U.S. Service Academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King s Point, NY.

Congressman Lamborn announces U.S. Service Academies nominees Colorado Springs, Colo (KRDO) - Congressman Doug Lamborn announced Saturday that fifty students from Colorado s Fifth Congressional District would receive his nomination for entry into one of the four service academies; the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. This year s fifty nominees were selected based on meeting or exceeding Congressman Lamborn s selection process to enter the esteemed military academies. “We have some of the finest young men and women here today,” Lamborn told KRDO before the ceremony. “They re hard working, they’re smart, they show leadership, they’re involved with different ways of helping other people, Lamborn says, and they have a desire to serve our country.”

McCall becomes Rear Admiral in Navy

WASHINGTON – With only 2% of all naval officers making flag rank, Cherokee Nation citizen Wesley McCall recently made rank as rear admiral (lower half) in the U.S. Navy after 31 years of service. “It’s a big honor for me to be honest with you,” McCall said. “It’s a big shock. But it’s just, I guess, it’s just a testament to all the hard work that you put in. You’ve learned along the way and I guess that the Navy has noticed that and that’s based on what all these flag officers have to offer.” Growing up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and graduating high school in 1986, McCall said the interest to enter the armed services came from his father.
