CAMDEN - Two Camden County residents are accused of defrauding pandemic financial-relief programs of $1.4 million, federal prosecutors say.
Stephen Bennett, 45, of Berlin and Rhonda Thomas, 36, of Sicklerville allegedly submitted 21 fraudulent applications for federal assistance to a dozen firms under the Paycheck Protection and Economic Injury Disaster programs.
The programs are intended to help firms overcome financial disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lenders approved 13 loans, according to the U.S. Attorney s Office for New Jersey.
It alleged Bennett and Thomas, also known as Rhonda Ware, used the money to buy personal items, including two BMW vehicles and a pair of Rolex watches valued at $42,800.
