On Sunday, residents in a section of Newark observed heavy police presence and SWAT operate in a community where a senior man was gunned down on Saturday afternoon.
The preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 1:44 p.m., gunfire rang out in the vicinity of 166 South 7th Street, sending police to the scene to investigate.
Upon arrival, police found an unidentified male suffering bullet wounds at that location.
Police say the victim was rushed the short distance to University Hospital for treatment but did not survive the shooting.
Residents said Newark Emergency Services Unit and heavily armed Special Weapons and Tactic officers closed off the block before 3:30 p.m. and searched a home for a person believed to be involved in the shooting.

It happened around 4:50 p.m. in the teens block of Elliot Street.
A preliminary investigation indicated an off-duty police officer fired his weapons at a suspect for an unknown reason.
EMS transported the officer to University Hospital, where it appears the cop was evaluated.
Police have the area sealed and there is a weapon confiscated and a suspect in custody at this time.

PATERSON When the trail of a narcotics investigation led Paterson police to a 30-unit apartment building at 146 Hamilton Ave., they picked up the phone and asked the owner for help.
Soon afterward, detectives on Monday raided an apartment in the building, where a drug ring allegedly stashed its cocaine and heroin, completing a bust that resulted in 15 arrests, police said. As part of the operation, detectives seized a loaded gun, more than 1,000 heroin packets, about 150 vials and baggies of crack cocaine and $8,184 in cash, police said.

An off-duty police officer fired his gun Wednesday afternoon in Newark while chasing down a robbery suspect, authorities said.
Very few details were immediately released, but according to initial information, no one was injured when the officer, who was not identified, fired his gun one time, Essex County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly told NJ Advance Media.
The incident happened at 4:46 p.m. in the area of Elliott Street and Summer Avenue, which is home to several small businesses including markets and a barbershop.
The shooting remained under investigation Wednesday evening by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which typically handles incidents where an officer discharges a weapon and no one is injured.
