ELLWOOD CITY – There will be no party politics in the May 18 primary race for Ellwood City Area School Board directors.
Still set to be one tough election, eight candidates are running as both Democrats and Republicans for five, four-year seats on the board.
Incumbents Kathy Galbreath McCommons, Barbara Wilson, Renee Pitrelli and Norm Boots will face off against former board member Kathleen Pansera and newcomers Claire Fauzey, Kathy Tillia and JoEllen Eichler in the primary, with all of the incumbents also defending their two-year seats in an unopposed race.
The first-timers are hoping to bring a new perspective to the district.

We are still ironing out the exact details, said Eric Rayner, the chairman of the fireworks subcommittee, noting that final decisions should be made in the next couple of weeks. ELLWOOD CITY – School district leaders have an answer to the age-old question, What would you do if you had a million dollars? Or, more accurately, an answer to the lesser-known question, What would you do with an extra $3.6 million?
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Ellwood City Area School District is set to receive $3,662,014 in Elementary and Secondary School Relief (ESSER) grants from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARP), the $1.9 trillion stimulus package signed into law by President Joe Biden in March. Though definite decisions haven t been made on spending yet, district officials are planning to use the money to close the learning gaps created by COVID-19, provide additional educational and emotional support for students and tackle some larger instructional initiatives.
After a year of unpredictable days, Beaver County schools are determined to offer juniors and seniors a night they can count on by giving them a prom.
Despite a rise in local cases of COVID-19, this high school staple will go on for most local districts next month and give back to students a bit of what the pandemic has taken away from them.
Some of the events announced are as follows: Central Valley School District s prom is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 7 at The Club at Shadow Lakes in Hopewell Township, Blackhawk School District s prom is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 14 at Blackhawk Stadium and Beaver Area School District s prom is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 22 at The Club at Shadow Lakes.

ELLWOOD CITY – With a turbulent start to the second semester, education and support staff at the Ellwood City Area School District are ready for some shots of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, of course.
Gov. Tom Wolf announced last Wednesday that the state will prioritize Pre-K-12 public and non-public school staff to receive the newly approved Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, and some faculty and staff at ECASD will be among the first to get it. I m just happy that our staff can get these shots, said Superintendent Wes Shipley.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the state has been slotted to receive 94,600 doses of the vaccine. Those doses will be distributed to state intermediate units based on the proportion of Pre-K to 12 school employees in each IU s region, and site operations will be overseen by the Pennsylvania National Guard and AMI Expeditionary Healthcare LLC.
