Athens-Clarke jail inmate dies after found in non-responsive state

An inmate died after he was found in a non-responsive state in his cell at the Athens-Clarke County Jail, according to Clarke County Sheriff John Q. Williams. The 52-year-old man was found about 5 a.m., and there was no indication of foul play, Williams said. The sheriff asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate. The man’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said the man had medical issues and the death appeared to be from natural causes. After the inmate s condition was discovered, jail staff began lifesaving efforts until emergency responders arrived, according to Williams.

Inmates at Athens-Clarke County Jail receive COVID vaccinations

Inmates at the Athens-Clarke County Jail were apparently in a good mood when it came time for a needle in the arm Thursday. About 50 inmates received a Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccination, according to Clarke County Sheriff John Q. Williams. The jail houses nearly 300 inmates. “I went out there and it seemed like everybody was excited. There was some talking and joking. I think everybody had a good time and appreciated the opportunity,” Williams said. Innovative Healthcare Institute of Athens donated the vaccination service to the jail. The single-dose vaccine was preferred for inmates to avoid having some miss a second dose due to being released or transferred.

Slaying of Athens man in Barrow County suspected case of gang violence

The slaying of an Athens man during a shooting May 2 on Georgia Highway 316 near Winder appears to be linked to gang violence, authorities said. “In my opinion, it’s definitely gang-related and in retaliation from other things (in Athens),” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Friday. The shooting claimed the life of 20-year-old Ketravian Tyvon Cole, a hip-hop artist in Athens who performed under the name EBE Montana. Cole, a passenger in a car, was shot about midnight and died at the scene. Another man, Mark Anthony Thomas, 42, of Athens was wounded and transported to a nearby hospital. Two others in the Nissan Versa were unharmed, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
