Seven Cedar Falls Businesses Fined for Selling Tobacco to Minors The Cedar Falls police have completed a compliance check on 40 city businesses in a joint effort with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division to insure tobacco products were not being sold to minors. According to a press release, seven businesses were reported to have violations: Bani’s, 2128 College St, Cedar Falls. Casey s, 601 Main St, Cedar Falls. Prime Mart, 2323 Main Street, Cedar Falls. The Landmark, 107 Main St, Cedar Falls. Casey s, 2425 Center Street, Cedar Falls. Prime Mart, 2728 Center Street, Cedar Falls. Metro Mart, 103 Franklin St, Cedar Falls. The compliance check is performed under the supervision of law enforcement. A customer who is underage is sent in to the business, and will attempt to purchase tobacco, alternative nicotine, or vapor products. Purchases of alcoholic beverages in the state soared to a record in 2020. That translated into a 6% increase in tax revenue for the state, to $35.4 million. With bars and restaurants shut down or open with limited capacity, drinkers turned to mixing their own cocktails or popping their bottles of wine or beer at home. Business at liquor stores boomed, and deliveries shot up, which more than offset the loss of sales at barstools and cafe tables.

BPD conducts Tobacco Compliance checks with Burlington area businesses

January 29, 2021 Burlington, Ia-   On Wednesday, January 27th 2021 the Burlington Police Department conducted tobacco compliance checks at thirty-two businesses within the greater Burlington area. Police worked with underage buyers who entered the establishments. Twenty-five businesses refused to sell to the underage buyers while seven businesses did sell. The employees who sold to the underage buyers were cited for Supplying Tobacco to Minors as an employee of the establishment. The offense is a simple misdemeanor. Businesses that sold to underage buyers: Hy-Vee Gas Station – 3120B Agency Street Circle K Gas – 421 North Main Street Gasland North 8th – 1204 North 8th Street Hot Spot Food and Liquor – 1618 Osborn Street

Johnson County COVID-19 update: 72 cases reported Saturday

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Iowa reported another 1,335 cases of COVID-19 and64 additional COVID-19-related deaths since the state s tally at 10 a.m. Friday, according to Coronavirus.Iowa.gov. Officials report a total of 4,321 people with COVID-19 have died from the disease across the state, including 49 in Johnson County. The first death here was reported April 4. A total of 1,418,952 Iowans have been tested for the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus, which causes the disease, including 68,211 in Johnson County. A total of 304,124 have tested positive in Iowa. The state has reported a total of 11,999 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, an increase of 72 since 10 a.m. Friday.
