New Delhi: Kaushik Basu, one of Indiaâs top economists, has been critical of the three new farm laws passed by the Modi government, calling them âflawedâ and âdetrimental to farmersâ.
But turns out, Basu, as Indiaâs Chief Economic Advisor in the UPA government, had favoured similar if not the same reforms.
Over the last few days, Basu has trashed the reforms on Twitter and also in a newspaper article.
“Our agriculture regulation needs change but the new laws will end up serving corporate interests more than farmers,” he said in a tweet.
Iâve now studied Indiaâs new farm bills & realize they are flawed & will be detrimental to farmers. Our agriculture regulation needs change but the new laws will end up serving corporate interests more than farmers. Hats off to the sensibility & moral strength of Indiaâs farmers.

Mumbai: A day after Congress President Sonia Gandhiâs letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray advocating a four-point agenda for the marginalised sections based on common minimum programme, Shiv Sena and NCP have denied any differences among Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has clarified that there was neither politics nor any pressure tactics in the letter.
âIf the Congress party has brought forward an agenda which is in the interest of people of Maharashtra and the state, then, it should be welcomed. There is no pressure politics,â said Raut.

Where Is the Middle Ground in This Farmers Protest?
Any committee that is set up will succeed only if it takes a long term and holistic view â this is not possible if its mandate is to find a middle ground between the farmers and the government.

The stand-off between the farmers and the government has persisted for weeks, with the Supreme Court now mulling intervention in the form of a committee that could be set up to solve the issue.
