Qatar Airways CEO appointed Chairman of oneworld’s Governing Board

Doha: The Governing Board of the oneworld global airline alliance has appointed Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, HE Akbar Al Baker to serve as its Chairman. He will succeed current oneworld Governing Board Chairman Alan Joyce, Group CEO of Qantas Group.
As Chairman of the oneworld Governing Board, Al Baker will oversee the alliance’s governance, chair oneworld’s Governing Board meetings and work closely with oneworld CEO Rob Gurney and the alliance’s management team.
Al Baker said: “As we emerge from some of the most challenging times ever facing the global airline industry, I am honoured to be chosen by my fellow board members to lead the Governing Board for oneworld, an alliance that has continued to expand since COVID-19 emerged, with the addition of two new members in Alaska Airlines and Royal Air Maroc.
Qatar Airways Cargo has sent three Boeing 777 freighters carrying essential medical aid to India to help the country as it battles a devastating COVID-19 wave.
The aid weighing some 300 tonnes was transported on three flights that departed one after the other for Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi.
The aid comprising PPE equipment, oxygen canisters, other essential medical items, was donated by individuals and companies from around the world. It was delivered under Qatar Airways Cargo’s WeQare initiative.
“Having seen with great sorrow the impact this further wave of COVID-19 infections has had on people in India, we knew we had to be part of the global effort to support the valiant health care workers in the country,” commented
Qatar Airways Eyes African Expansion With New Abidjan Route

In a statement released last week, Doha-based Qatar Airways announced it would operate three flights per week to the Côte d’Ivoire capital Abidjan via Accra in Ghana starting from June 16, 2021. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Abidjan will be the fourth new African destination served by the Gulf state carrier. On the route, Qatar Airways will deploy one of its state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner configured with 22 seats in business class and 232 seats in economy class.
