Highlights from BYU colleges: Honors student works for NASA, Design student wins national competition

The Daily Universe BYU Honors student Gabe Richardson is working with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. (Gabe Richardson) “Curiosity is a necessity working at NASA as we work to solve some of the hardest problems,” Richardson said. “The Honors focus on interdisciplinary thinking has helped maintain my curious mind and continue to love learning many kinds of new ideas. These new ideas create pathways for creativity and innovation in solving hard problems.” Richardson was working on developing high-reflecting mirrors for spacecraft optics at NASA when he decided to ask the principal investigator if he could get further involved in the program. His skills in optical fabrication and testing were the perfect match for what the team needed. Richardson has been instrumental in developing NASA’s Quantum Dot Spectrometer, which lets scientists interpret light-matter interactions on a miniaturized scale.  

Annual Concerto/Aria/Composition Competition Concert Presented Virtually March 5 - Western Illinois University News

March 4, 2021 MACOMB, IL The Western Illinois University School of Music will present its annual Concerto/Aria/Composition Competition Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 5 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall. The student winners of the 2020 competition will perform with the WIU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by WIU Symphony Orchestra Conductor Kenny Lee. Due to the restrictions currently in place, there are no general admission performances in the COFAC Recital Hall. This performance will be broadcast on the School of Music s YouTube Channel and Facebook page. The annual Concerto/Aria/Composition Concert features student soloists who are selected as winners of a competition by a panel of external judges. Ball State to have in-person commencement ceremonies this spring MUNCIE, Ind.  After seniors missed out on a traditional graduation ceremony due to COVID-19 in 2020, Ball State University will resume in-person commencement activities this spring for the classes of 2020 and 2021. The university announced Wednesday that in accordance with state and local guidelines, it will hold a series of smaller, outdoor ceremonies at Scheumann Stadium for both classes. Three days in May will be dedicated for ceremonies. The event will take place rain or shine. 7p.m. Friday, May 7 for graduate school doctoral, specialist and master’s candidates 8a.m. Saturday, May 8 for the R.
