There s also plans on turning the 1914 Nueces County Courthouse into a boutique hotel. Author: Michael Gibson (KIII) Updated: 10:30 PM CDT May 4, 2021
NUECES COUNTY, Texas The President and CEO of Visit Corpus Christi said there are ongoing talks to build a hotel that would connect to the American Bank Center.
Experts said that the City of Corpus Christi finally needs to build a hotel that connects to the ABC. The City has lost so much convention business to other cities around the state because they have a hotel connected to their convention center.
Four years ago, the city was looking at a $165 million expansion of the ABC which would include a 15 story hotel. However, the idea went nowhere.
The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District earned a state grant of more than $18 million to increase capacity for COVID-19 vaccinations.
The Texas Department of State Health Services grant can be used through 2024 and can cover vaccine-related costs the health district has incurred since Dec. 1, 2020. Those expenses must be approved by the state agency.
The grant is “going to increase COVID-19 vaccination capacity across the jurisdiction, including high-risk and underserved populations,” Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales said during a news conference Thursday. “It will ensure high-quality and safe administration of COVID-19 vaccines, and it will ensure equitable distribution and administration of COVID-19 vaccines.”
A proposed law that would allow the port to flex new development powers remained in discussions Friday, days after a tense hearing on the state stage.
At its crux: whether the Port of Corpus Christi Authority should be allowed to broaden its development options beyond what is now permitted under state law – solely development to facilitate navigational and maritime commerce.
The distinct lines of how the bill is perceived were well-illustrated in a committee hearing at the Texas House of Representatives on Tuesday.
On one side, proponents have pointed to the bill as an opportunity for new port investment, promoted as a means to diversify the port s portfolio as well as benefit specific economically disadvantaged areas.
Nueces County pivots from large COVID-19 vaccine sites as supply grows
Nueces County will soon pivot from large COVID-19 vaccination hubs to smaller sites as supply of the shots continues to grow.
One of those smaller sites is a new clinic at La Palmera, across from Grimaldi’s, which launched last Tuesday and is open during mall hours 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
In the clinic’s first week, more than 4,000 people have been vaccinated, public health director Annette Rodriguez told the Caller-Times.
County commissioners on Tuesday approved a 30-day, $10,000 lease with La Palmera during their meeting Tuesday. County Judge Barbara Canales said the county will decide whether to stay at the site longer.
