The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today said that the well-marked low pressure over Lakshadweep under the influence of Cyclone Tauktae is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and reach near Gujarat coast on the evening of May 18. Elaborating on the latest developments around Cyclone Tauktae and its aftermath, IMD in its update issued on Thursday said that the low pressure area is likely to become well-marked over Lakshadweep on May 14 morning and thereafter concentrate into a deep depression over the same region by the morning of May 15 and further intensify into cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. This cyclonic storm is most likely to move north-northwestwards towards Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coasts.

New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard on Wednesday (May 12) issued advisory to the Fisheries department to warn the fishermen in Arabian sea coast, south Tamil Nadu coast not to proceed to sea and also to return to nearest harbour in view of cyclone building up in Arabian Sea between May 14-16.
The development comes hours after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast about a low-pressure area which is forming over the Arabian Sea and warned that it may intensify into a cyclone by May 16. Earlier in the day, the IMD too had advised fishermen out in deep sea in coastal areas of the country to return to the coast and also advised them not to venture into the sea.

It has been predicted that the cyclone, if formed, would affect Gujarat s coastal belt of Saurashtra and Kutch region.

AHMEDABAD: In view of the meteorological department s prediction about formation of a cyclone in the Arabian sea in the next few days, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Wednesday held a meeting and asked the officials of coastal districts in the state to remain alert and take necessary safety measures, a minister said.
Officials have predicted that the possible cyclonic activity in the east-central Arabian Sea would bring thunderstorms in the coastal region of the state, including Saurashtra and south Gujarat region.

However, there is no immediate warning that the cyclone, if formed, would hit Gujarat. In view of the possible cyclonic storm, which would be named as cyclone Tauktae, the Chief Minister gave necessary instructions to the officials, Minister of State for Home, Pradeepsinh Jadeja, told reporters in Gandhinagar.
