Honda Civic Type R Is Now More Expensive Than Ever

It s just the latest in a long line of gradual price bumps for Honda s hottest Civic model. Sad news for fans of attainable performance cars: the Honda Civic Type R - Honda s hottest, most high-performance compact car - is getting a price increase as it slides into 2021. The base MSRP of the Civic R has nudged upward by $400, at the same time that Honda has increased its destination fee by $40 for cars, and $55 for trucks and crossovers, spelling out a total price increase of $440 compared to the 2020 model year. That may not seem like a whole lot for a car that costs nearly $40k in the US already, but it s better than half of an entire extra monthly payment, depending on how long a given customer might be financing for. It s also far from the only price increase that the Civic R has had since its introduction.

Honda Civic Type R Factory Shut Down Again

There s one reason why. The current generation Honda Civic Type R hot hatchback and Civic Hatchback are both built in the UK at the automaker s Swindon factory. This will change for the upcoming eleventh-generation models that are set to be built in the US. In the meantime, the outgoing generation models remain in production but there s a problem. Again. Automotive News Europe reports Honda has been forced to halt production for a second time at Swindon for at least two days this week because of global supply delays. Swindon was forced to shut down for a few days last month because of several issues, such as growing Covid-19 numbers and Brexit-related problems.

There s A Honda Civic Type R Factory Problem

The perfect storm of bad things is happening. The current generation Honda Civic Type R and regular hatchback undergo final assembly in the UK. Honda s factory here is scheduled to close permanently next year, with next-generation models set to be manufactured in Ohio. In the meantime, production was supposed to continue at this plant in Swindon, about 60 miles west of London, until the generational changeover but this has been temporarily halted, according to Automotive News. The reason is a combination of factors that struck at the same time, including a growing number of Covid-19 cases, the pre-Christmas holiday rush, and Brexit-related preparations. There s also a parts shortage from Asia.
