A great read Robert, thanks. This idea of the gift economy is deeply culturally bound in Asia, where at least twice a year families gather, and gifts, usually of money are exchanged. The head of the family (usually a grandmother) gets the bulk of the serious giving, and status is attached to generosity to her. Children also receive gifts, for which they bow to the responsible relative. One need not give gifts, but if not you lose the opportunity to gain status, and the children will not bow to you. Grandmothers often recycle some of their gifts to the grandchildren or single adolescents. Governments also understand that they are expected to deliver, and a lack of delivery is accompanied by a corresponding lack of respect.

Attacks on Australian university jobs deepen but union boasts it is stronger

Attacks on Australian university jobs deepen but union boasts it is “stronger” Over recent weeks, a “second wave” of job cuts and course closures has hit university workers and students around Australia, on top of the unprecedented destruction of tens of thousands of jobs, especially casual positions, in the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite widespread hostility to the assault, reflected in protest rallies by staff and students at many campuses, the attacks are continually deepening, assisted by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), which is isolating each struggle and opposing any national industrial action to halt the assault.

Skin cancer experts warn Australians against using aerosol suncreens

Aerosol sunscreens are putting Australians at a greater risk of sunburn, new research has uncovered.  Cancer Council is urging Australians to avoid using aerosol sunscreens off the back of new research conducted by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The research looked at nine different popular aerosol sunscreen products and found it was extremely difficult to get adequate levels of UV protection using them.  QUT s research focused on sunscreens from Neutrogena, Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic, Surf Life Saving and Woolworths.  Cancer Council is urging consumers to steer clear of aerosol sunscreens as new research found they contain 50% less sunscreen compared to lotions or creams

The research vessel – operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute – is nearing the end of a month-long expedition to map undersea features that formed during the last Ice Age, to help us better understand today’s rapidly changing reef environment.
