Why you should avoid aerosol sunscreens

Slip, slop, slap, seek, slide has been a key message during Australian summers for generations. The iconic sun protection campaign reminds us to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunnies. But with summer holidays ahead, the Cancer Council has urged Aussies to be cautious about how they slop on their sunscreen, following new research by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). This type of sunscreen could be deadly

Health by Evin Priest   Relying on aerosol sunscreens could be deadly this summer, with a host of dodgy products deemed ineffective by alarming new research, skin cancer experts have warned. Cancer Council has urged Australians against using only aerosol sunscreens to protect themselves after an investigation conducted by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) into nine commercially popular products revealed it was difficult to achieve the actual level of UV protection stated on the can. Spray times required to achieve the UV protection advertised on the tested aerosols ranged from 4-14 seconds per limb or 29-98 seconds for a full body application.

Detectives probe whether fly-in-fly-out killer was behind the sniper assassination of Rebels boss

Detectives are investigating whether an east coast hitman was behind the gangland killing of a Rebels bikie boss who was shot dead by a sniper in a highly-orchestrated assassination. Nick Martin was shot in the back while attending the Outlaw Nitro Challenge drag racing event at the Perth Motorplex, Kwinana Beach, at 8.30pm on Saturday - just four days after Western Australia opened its borders to New South Wales and Victoria. The underworld figure died at the scene in front of horrified families and children, including his own wife and step-daughter. Western Australia Police have confirmed to Daily Mail Australia they are working with partner agencies in eastern states as they probe the possibility of a fly-in-fly-out killer.

Why slop is better than spray for sun protection

Health by Andrew Koubaridis Premium Content   Nine popular sun protection products are exposing Australians to sunburn because they take too long to apply to get the right UV protection. The alarming discovery was made by Queensland University of Technology researchers who examined nine commercially available aerosol sunscreen products. Their research showed it could take between 4 to 14 seconds per limb and 29 to 98 seconds for a full body application to get the advertised UV protection. The actual time could be even higher as the tests were done in a laboratory in controlled conditions. Some also contained more propellant than sunscreen. The products investigated were: Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen and Beach Defence Sunscreen Spray from Neutrogena, Simply Protect Kids Spray, Sport Cool Zone Spray, Ultra Clear Spray, Dry Balance Clear Spray, all from Banana Boat, Tropic Silk Hydration Sunscreen Spray from Hawaiian Tropic, Sunscreen S
