2021 WARSO: FRSC warns against drunk-driving in Akwa Ibom

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwa Ibom Command, has reiterated determination to apprehend drunk drivers to ensure road safety.
The Akwa Ibom Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Matthew Olonisaye, urged also motorists on Saturday to desist from flouting all traffic rules and regulations.
Olonisaye spoke at the commemoration of West Africa Road Safety Organisation (WARSO).
The event held at the Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) Park in Uyo.
He expressed displeasure that some road accidents resulted from carelessness and impatience and some as a result drunk driving.

An event planner based in Abeokuta, Ogun State identified only as Bola went for a routine tyre change in the state capital sometime in 2016. She noticed the previous day that one of the tyres of her car was bad and needed replacement. Her aged but reliable Toyota Sienna never gave her any problems before then.
On getting to her regular vulcaniser’s shop, she requested a used tyre. Someone told her about what she termed the durability and safety of used tyres compared to inferior ones sold as new tyres.
The West African region leads other regions globally in the number of road crashes and fatalities, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said.
While speaking at the 2021 West African Road Safety Organisation (WARSO) Day in Lagos on Saturday, he stated that West Africa generated 16 per cent of road fatalities and crashes in the world.
Addressing the theme “Road Safety Consciousness in the Midst of Global Pandemic”. Ogungbemide said WARSO was established to reduce the rate of raod crashed in the region.
“On the average, 18 deaths are recorded out of 100,000 world population number and the population of West Africa vehicular volume stands at two per cent compared to the entire world,” he said.
