KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) The Kalamazoo City Commission has unanimously approved its Fiscal Year 2021 budget as of Monday night.
During a virtual meeting, Commissioners discussed the matter at length with multiple city workers. This follows multiple discussions of the budget in previous meetings, as well as a public hearing that was held earlier this month.
In total, the city passed a budget of $213,892,050, with $68.3 million allocated for the General Fund. For the General Fund, this represents an overall increase of 1.03% when compared to the Adopted 2020 Budget, according to city officials.

KALAMAZOO, MI Firefighters snuffed out a first-floor apartment fire Monday afternoon in the city’s Milwood neighborhood.
Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the call in the 1700 block of East Cork Street at around 2:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 18, according to a news release from the department.
Officers arrived to find smoke coming from the main floor of the multi-story residential building.

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) An apartment fire that occurred in Kalamazoo Monday is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office, according to a statement from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS).
Around 2:30 p.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of East Cork Street for a report of a structure fire. When officers arrived, smoke was observed coming from the main floor of the multi-story residential building.
Officers entered the apartment building and located the fire in a first-floor apartment. According to a report from the department, they were able to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes and are currently still on scene.
