Flagler Schools Will Keep Mask Rules In Effect, Making them Voluntary in Summer

Students in Flagler County schools will be required to continue with masking, as a safety precaution, until the end of the school year. Once summer programs start, masks will be optional. (Flagler Schools) The Flagler County school district today reiterated that its masking requirement in all schools will stay in place until the end of the regular school year. The requirement will be lifted at the beginning of summer school, when masking will become voluntary. Masking will remain voluntary when the next school year begins in August, unless the district experiences significant spikes in infections, in which case masking requirements may be reinstituted.

Flagler Tiger Bay Club The Flagler Tiger Bay Club Scholarship Committee announced five scholarship winners, totaling more than $20,000.  Led by Scholarship Committee Chairman Gary Walsh, committee members evaluated a number of scholarship applications, selecting Flagler Palm Coast High School senior Reilly Maresca, and Matanzas High School seniors Brianna Whitfield, Jessica Slusarz, Hope Singleton and Lovie Haley, based on guidelines established by the organization in 2019.  “As an organization, we had developed criteria that would emphasize the mission of Flagler Tiger Bay, so that we would be choosing applicants that showed interest in engaging in community activities and a desire to engage in future studies and careers in the areas of government, law, criminal justice, not for profit work, community service and related areas,” said Walsh.  

Greg Schwartz named as new principal at Flagler Palm Coast High School

Greg Schwartz, the principal of South Daytona Elementary School, will become the new principal at Flagler Palm Coast High School, according to a news release from Flagler Schools. “In the upcoming weeks as I transition into my new role, I am eager to meet with faculty, staff, students and community members. Joining Florida‘s Proudest Campus is a dream come true. GO BULLDOGS!”   GREG SCHWARTZ Schwartz takes the seat previously held by the late Tom Russell, who was FPC s principal from the 2019-2020 school year until his death from COVID-19 complications in December.

Former FPC principal and former superintendent of the Volusia County school district Tom Russell died in December after contracting the coronavirus. Russell took over the role in 2019, after Robert Bob Wallace, another former principal in Volusia, resigned after 10 months.  Now, FPC can turn its attention toward another vacancy  head coach of the school s football program. Travis Roland resigned earlier this month, accepting the same position at his alma mater, Mainland High. He guided the Bulldogs to the playoffs in four consecutive years, including the first undefeated regular season in school history in his debut campaign of 2017. Brian Cox, the team s linebackers coach, assumes head coaching responsibilities on an interim basis. The Florida High School Athletic Association s first date for allowable, non-contact spring football practices was Monday.
