Women awaiting liver transplants in the United States are known to be about one-third more likely than men to become too ill to undergo surgery or die before receiving a liver. Now a study headed by UC San Francisco and Columbia University highlights the role that frailty plays in this gender gap.
The study followed 1,405 patients with cirrhosis, of whom 41 percent were women, awaiting liver transplantation at nine transplant centers in the United States. The men, whose ages ranged from 49 to 63, were more likely to have chronic hepatitis C and alcoholic liver disease (27 percent versus 22, and 33 percent versus 19 percent). The women, whose ages ranged from 50 to 63, were more likely to have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and autoimmune cholestatic liver disease (23 percent versus 16 percent, and 23 percent versus 9 percent).
How to Avoid Lower Back Pain While Running Marty Munson
So somewhere along the line, your back started hurting while you run. Or maybe a little bit after you run. You get this ache in your lower back, take a little time off, go back to running again, and voila, lower back pain all over again.
So you go to the doctor, who orders some scans. And they turn up exactly nothing. Which does pretty much zero for your frustration level
or your back pain.
So why the heck does your back hurt? We checked in with Colleen M. Brough, DPT, assistant professor of rehabilitation and regenerative medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center to find out what’s going on.
“I am so disappointed and saddened that this happened,” a New York hospital executive wrote to his staff after workers who did not have priority cut the line for the vaccine.
I remember starting one week in the ICU, toward the middle of March. We had maybe two COVID-19 patients there. By the time I finished the week, our ICU was filled with COVID-19 patients. There were so many operating rooms that became ICUs because of the tidal wave of critically ill patients coming in. Overnight, we had to develop and enact entirely new systems of health care delivery. We had to train other doctors to take care of patients with severe respiratory failure. We had to create ICU beds out of operating rooms from what were once hospital floors. There were field hospitals erupting in Central Park. It just became all-encompassing.
