Thanks to state taxes, Pueblo County was able to distribute $1.95 million in scholarship funds drawn from excise taxes on marijuana sales.
The funds, titled the Pueblo County Scholarships, were distributed to Colorado State University Pueblo, Pueblo Community College, Pueblo African American Concern Organization, the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation and the Southern Colorado Press Club.
The funds were distributed as a one-time out-of-cycle award allocation that was deemed necessary to aid in balancing the marijuana excise tax scholarship program account.
The funds are to be distributed to students for the 2021 spring semester and were divided among the institutions based on the applications sent in. The size of an institution as well as academics were weighed in the applications.
Puebloans who made $57,000 or less in 2020 will soon have access to a free tax filing service.
Through a partnership between Tax Help Colorado, Colorado State University Pueblo and Pueblo Community College, student volunteers trained as IRS-certified tax preparers will provide virtual tax assistance from Feb. 2 through March 16.
The program has operated in Pueblo for the past 12 years, and Tene Greenhood, an accounting lecturer in CSU Pueblo’s Hasan School of Business who supervises the sites at both Pueblo schools, said in previous years anywhere between 50 and 400 community members have used the service.
“But this year there’s really no limit,” Greenhood said.

A plan designed to strengthen the economic resolve of the Steel City and make Pueblo a dynamic community was unveiled Monday.
The 257-page “One Pueblo” plan was born out of a collaboration among 21 agencies that are a part of the Business Economic and Recovery Team. The team formed in March to help businesses survive through the coronavirus pandemic.
After a slew of interviews, surveys and meetings, staff with Ady Advantage the firm hired to help pull together the city’s economic development vision identified key elements critical to the economic recovery in Pueblo.
“Some of the best and brightest days are ahead for our community,” said Steven Trujillo, director of the Pueblo Latino Chamber of Commerce.
Tampa Bay s Ryan Jensen is the game s best center and one of its most relentless players

NOBODY BESIDES A quarterback or a nose tackle has ever seen more of a center than the entire world saw of Tampa Bay s Ryan Jensen in the NFC divisional-round playoff against New Orleans. His red hair flying outside his helmet like a contrail, Jensen bounced from defensive tackle to linebacker to safety and back to linebacker, truffle hunting for Saints, his 66 jersey just one 6 shy of biblical accuracy.
It was a remarkable show of physical endurance and sustained vitriol, sure to be repeated Sunday in the NFC Championship Game. It was so comprehensive it prompted rap impresario Rick Ross to publicly recommend that Tom Brady purchase Jensen an Escalade, one of the new ones. And while Jensen spread himself throughout the Saints defense, he reserved an exclusive strain of antipathy for linebacker Alex Anzalone, who found himself on his back underneath Jensen in all kin
