The unseasonably cold winter weather that swept through last week may not have had as big an impact on Terrebonne and Lafourche as other places in the state, but it was a real danger for the most vulnerable in the community, the homeless.
Early-morning temperatures Feb. 16 of 24 degrees in Houma and 23 in Thibodaux made it the coldest Mardi Gras on record in both cities, according to Weather Underground.
Both Terrebonne and Lafourche law enforcement sought out those without shelter to place them in hotels for the night. In total, 14 people were housed during the below-freezing temperatures that chilled the south around Mardi Gras.
Two infrastructure projects, one in Thibodaux and the other in Houma, will receive federal grants of more than $3.3 million combined, officials said this week.

He opens a Cajun restaurant, of course.
Karl Cantrelle Jr. and his wife Charity Cantrelle bring Cajun culture and cuisine to the Great White North with their restaurant, Southern Roots, in Dalmeny, Saskatchewan.
Karl, who hails from Bayou Blue, said the restaurant is modelled after the culture of his hometown. The walls are lined with trawling nets, the radio blares swamp pop and meals are served in the traditional ways Karl grew up with. Asked if his potato salad was with or without mustard, he assured it was with.
