But the brown bear was in downtown Douglas, Ariz., and residents there watched in shock and worry last week as he climbed up a utility pole, prompting rescue efforts from numerous animal and law enforcement agencies. According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department in Tucson, the ordeal caused parts of Highway 191 to be briefly shut down as its officers and officials from the Douglas Police Department, Cochise County Sheriff's Office, and U.S. Border Patrol figured out how to get the bear down from its precarious position.

DRAGOON, Ariz. Evacuations are in place for homes along Sacred Rock Road in Dragoon, southeast of Tucson, due to the Amerind Fire, according to fire officials.
The fire has burned 110 acres and is moving northeast, officials said.
Multiple structures are at risk, officials said. An air and ground attack are in progress.

BISBEE, Ariz. - A retired Border Patrol agent arrested in connection with rapes two decades ago in at least four Arizona communities has been denied bail following a hearing that included testimony from one distraught victim and details of a struggle during the arrest.
Judge Timothy Dickerson of Cochise County Superior Court ruled Thursday that John Daly III, 57, would remain in custody on sexual assault and other counts stemming from a 2001 attack on a Bisbee woman, Herald/Review Media reported.
