The Fort McMurray Catholic School District won’t pilot the provincial government’s draft K-6 curriculum.
After consultation with their board of trustees, staff and community, the decision was made not to pilot the draft curriculum for the 2021-22 school year.
The government of Alberta announced in March schools would soon focus on four themes: literacy, numeracy, citizenship, and practical skills.
However, it has received heavy backlash over the lack of alleged consultation, focuses, and more.
“We appreciate the fulsome review and recommendations provided by our curriculum review and senior leadership teams,” said Cathy Langmead, FMCSD Board of Education Chair.

Fort McMurray Catholic School Division (FMCSD) will not pilot the draft K-6 curriculum next fall. All school divisions in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo are now refusing to pilot the draft program. More than 40 Alberta school divisions are also refusing to take part in the pilot program.
In a Friday release, FMCSD said piloting the new curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic would be a “disservice” to staff, students and families.

Fort McMurray, our beautiful northern home is known for many things, but, environmental stewardship might not be the top 10. At the Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) however, environmental stewardship is certainly top three.
Did you know FMPSD is dedicated to environmental stewardship through the efforts of a âGreen Sceneâ committee? The Green Scene is a collaboration between the Board of Trustees, our Superintendent Jennifer Turner, administration, teachers, parents, and on special occasions, even students. Their collective vision is to encourage environmental education and action in our 16 schools, Division and community. This yearâs committee is made up of 10 members.
