Minor tension prevailed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Wednesday after the families of the two conservancy workers who died in an accident at Ikkarai Boluvampatti village on Tuesday refused to accept the bodies. R. Palani (60) from Valluvar Street and M. Palanisamy (50) from Gandhi Nagar, Semmedu, died after the battery-operated three-wheeler they travelled along with seven others veered off the rod and plunged into a slope at Ikkarai Boluvampatti. Rasu (50), Marimuthu (55), Ammasai (65), Selvi (50), Marimuthu (55), Kamalam (65) and Arukkani (55) were injured in the accident that took place when they were returning home after doing conservancy works at Ikkarai Boluvampatti panchayat, said the police. The kin accepted the bodies after the police and Revenue Department officials held talks with them and pacified them.

Fresh cases fall to 26,513, deaths remain high at 490; over 98,000 vaccinated
The State’s daily COVID-19 case count dipped to 26,513 on Tuesday, bringing its active caseload below the 3 lakh-mark. However, the toll due to the infection remained high, as 490 more people, including a 105-year-old woman, succumbed to it.
Presently, 2,96,131 people are under treatment for COVID-19. As many as 31,673 people were discharged after treatment, as recoveries continued to exceed new cases. Chennai registered the most number of discharges, as 4,232 people were discharged after treatment.

29,272 fresh cases push the overall tally to 14,38,509; 79,929 persons vaccinated
A total of 298 persons died of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu, with Chennai alone accounting for 92 deaths, even as the State reported 29,272 fresh cases on Tuesday, taking its overall tally to 14,38,509.
With 7,466 fresh cases, Chennai’s overall tally surpassed the four lakh-mark. So far, 4,04,733 persons have tested positive in the city. The overall tally of both Chengalpattu and Coimbatore went past one lakh with these districts recording 2,419 and 2,650 fresh cases respectively.
Man arrested for duping private firm

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Coimbatore City Police on Monday arrested a 32-year-old man on charges of defrauding a private firm of ₹ 29.98 lakh. The arrested has been identified as K. Raju, a resident of Process Server Street, B.S.S. Road in Tiruppur.
As per a release issued by CCB, Raju worked in a private firm near Sulur. The firm offered booking of flight tickets. As per complaint lodged by the principal manager of the firm, Raju cheated the firm of ₹ 29,98,217 by defrauding the collection amount generated from flight ticket bookings between September 1, 2019 and July 30, 2020.
