Coimbatore: Tribal people in Anaikatti have appealed to the district administration and the health department to convert the local primary health centre (PHC) into a 24-hour medical facility with oxygen, beds, 108 ambulances, nurses and doctors.
While there are 13,000 tribal people living in and around Anaikatti and 11,000 tribals in mountains and forests, a doctor visits the centre only between 10am and 1pm, the petition said. “The centre has five beds and quarters for doctors and nurses to stay even at night,” said Jeyamuruganveli, senior member of the South Indian Tribal Welfare Association. “It lacks infrastructure to treat pregnant women and Covid-19 people. The nearest major hospital is Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, which is 35km away.”

Race Course and Neighbourhood Association has said that it had provided nursing staff support to the district administration.
In a release, the organisation said it had sent 106 nurses to the administration, which had deployed them in Government Medical College and ESI Hospital, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, primary health centres, COVID-19 Care Centres and vaccination centres.
The association, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore Cancer Foundation and a few individuals had played a supportive role by volunteering to bear the cost of compensation or stipend for the 106 nurses for three months, which was around ₹50 lakh.
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and PSG College of Technology had come forward to provide accommodation and food for the nurses, the release also said and added that the Coimbatore Corporation and chipped in with transport support for the nurses to reach their work spots.

Patients who do not have serious symptoms of COVID-19 can visit the centres In a move to reduce congestion at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital, the COVID-19 screening centres at these hospitals will function from nearby schools from Monday.
The COVID-19 screening centre of CMCH has been shifted to nearby St. Francis School. Similarly, the screening centre of ESI Hospital has been moved to Corporation High School at Varadharajapuram, said a statement issued by the district administration.
