Coimbatore: The district recorded more than 3,000 Covid cases for the second consecutive day on Saturday, with 3,124 fresh cases, taking the total number of cases to 1,12,358.
With only 1,222 people getting discharged, the number of active cases crossed the 20,000-mark to 20,173. The district also recorded 20 deaths due to the virus, which is the highest ever number of deaths recorded officially on a single day since March 22, last year. With this, the toll jumped to 857. Recovery rate also dropped to a low of 81.2%.
Nine of them died despite having no co-morbidities. Of the nine, three were between below 40 years. While a 29-year-old man died two days after hospitalization at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, a 37-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman had fever and cough for six days and only then got hospitalized. Another six of them were in the 40-50 age bracket, of which only one had co-morbidities (thyroid).

The newly constructed annexe to the mortuary at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) got a makeover on Friday after photos and videos of the bodies of COVID-19 victims lying on the floor were circulated in social media.
On Friday, CMCH administration shared photos of the makeover look of the annexe, with adequate numbers of racks to keep the bodies in body bags.
The Hindu, in its columns on April 28, had highlighted the demand of people working in the mortuary for a separate facility to keep the bodies of people who die of COVID-19. It also highlighted that such bodies were often kept on the ground at the back of the morgue where visitors were entering.

Officials said that six buses were operated for about 180 staff members of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) The buses were operated from Thondamuthur, Madukkarai, Ondipudur, Thudiyalur and Saravanampatti where the staff members boarded the buses at around 5.30 a.m. The number of buses could be increased as per the requirement, the officials said.
