Coimbatore: Four oxygen generators that can provide oxygen to 80 beds will soon be operational at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
The generators, being set up in the hospital’s cosmetic surgery ward, are likely to be commissioned on Monday. Each generator will serve 20 beds and produce around 100 litres of oxygen per minute. CMCH now has 504 oxygen-supported beds and 213 ventilator beds.
As many as 41 Rotary Clubs raised Rs 1 crore to install the four oxygen generators, which can serve 80 patients requiring oxygen. “All clubs are raising funds for the project. Corporates like Karur Vysya Bank and Aquasub Engineering also contributed large chunks from their corporate social responsibility fund,” said a club member.
Coimbatore: The district recorded 2,068 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday, taking the total number of cases to 88,342. This is the second day in a row that the district is recording more than 2,000 cases.
Though 1,551 people were discharged, the number of active cases inched close to 10,000-mark at 9,845.
The district recorded four deaths due to the virus, taking the toll to 740. The deaths included a 77-year-old man, who died 10 days after hospitalization and a 42-year-old man, who died eight days after hospitalization. Both did not have comorbidities. The other two victims were a 46-year-old man with heart problems and a 50-year-old hypertensive man, who died due to bilateral bronchopneumonia.

CHENNAI: Robert (name changed) died two days ago. After running from one hospital to another for a couple of days, 59-year-old Robert’s family admitted him into a government hospital in Thoothukudi on May 2. “But we could not find an ICU bed. He had no oxygen. That is the main reason he died,” rued his nephew speaking to Express.

AAA A total of 2,068 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Coimbatore district on Thursday, registering the highest daily caseload reported so far.
The district had 9,845 active cases of the disease and 1,551 persons recovered.
The Health Department said that four more persons from the district died of the disease, taking the death toll to 740.
While three persons aged 42, 46 and 52 died of COVID-19 at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday, a 77-year-old man succumbed to the disease at a private hospital on Monday.
Meanwhile, S. Gunasekaran (53), station officer of Fire and Rescue Services station at Thondamuthur, died of COVID-19 on Thursday. This death was not listed in the media bulletin on Thursday.
