Coimbatore: The district’s Covid-19 curve continued to climb and reached a new high, with 1,566 fresh cases on Monday. It took the total number of cases to 82,689. With 1,063 people discharged, the number of active cases crossed the 8,000-mark to reach 8,188. With 73,772 people getting cured, the recovery rate stood at 89.2%. The district also recorded three deaths due to the virus, taking the toll to 729. The deaths included a 44-year-old man, who died three days after hospitalization and a 51-year-old man, who died after four days of hospitalization in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Saturday due to bilateral bronchopneumonia, despite having no comorbidities. The third victim was a 72-year-old man, who died after three days of hospitalization in CMCH.

Vasanth (30) from Kakkan Nagar near Singanallur and his relative Mahesh succumbed to stab injuries they suffered in a fight with another group at Bharathipuram near Sulur. According to the police, Vasanth, Mahesh and Prem were confronted by their relative Saravanan of Bharathipuram and four others at Palapalayam around 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The five men, including Saravanan’s brother Sathish, assaulted the trio. Mahesh had picked up a quarrel with Saravanan, also his relative, late on Monday suspecting that the latter was involved in the pelting of stones at his house. As a retaliation, Saravanan, Sathish, Hari, Dinesh and Srinath waylaid the two-wheeler travelled by Vasanth, Mahesh and Prem on Tuesday morning and assaulted them. While Vasanth died on the spot, Mahesh succumbed to injuries later.

As COVID-19 cases surge, some hospitals run at full capacity

All the government hospitals together have 449 beds vacant With Coimbatore district seeing a steady increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, several hospitals, especially the ones in the private sector, run at full capacity. As per the data shared by the district administration, 18 out of 50-odd private hospitals in Coimbatore had their beds allocated for COVID-19 patients occupied on Sunday and Monday. Several other private hospitals had less than 10 such beds remaining vacant. A private medical college hospital had its 420 beds dedicated for COVID-19 treatment occupied from May 1. Another private hospital had its 267 beds reserved for COVID-19 occupied from Sunday.
