Barbados’ top table tennis player Tyrese Knight has landed a spot to compete against some of the world’s best when the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) high-performance camp commences tomorrow March 3 and runs until the 13th in Doha Qatar
The 21-year-old is seeking to make history for Barbados by becoming the first tennis player from the island to qualify for the Olympics.
While in Qatar, Knight, a former Caribbean junior champion will also compete in the Olympic qualifiers starting March 14th and ending the 17th.
Speaking with Barbados TODAY, the former Combermere student said: “Physically I am ready. I was able to go to the gym in Barbados even though it was locked down and trained with my trainer. Mentally I am okay but we will see how it goes when I am playing.

China has withdrawn from the World Table Tennis (WTT) Middle East hub because of COVID-19 concerns.
Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) secretary general Qin Zhijian confirmed that the country would not be competing in Doha this month.
A WTT Contender event is scheduled to be held in the Qatari capital from March 3 to 6, followed by the WTT Star Contender tournament from March 8 to 13. We will not be able to send table tennis players to play outside of China until the Olympic Games due to the ongoing pandemic situation worldwide, Qin said. We have been putting in full effort to make it happen because we truly wish to participate in and show support to the first ever WTT event, but now sadly we need to cancel our participation to WTT Middle East Hub.

Para table tennis is no exception, the key date in question being ready for Wednesday 25th August, the first day of play in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Making sure that prior to the first ball being hit in anger in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the fact all qualification procedures are completed weeks in advance, is now a matter of priority.
The situation in many countries of the world is still uncertain; therefore, the International Table Tennis Federation and the International Paralympic Committee have agreed to postpone the World Qualification tournament, to be staged in the Tri Lilije Sports Hall in Lasko, Slovenia, from the originally scheduled for Thursday 3rd June to Saturday 5th June.
