Benicia Unified School District had 405 12th grade students during 2018-2019 school year, according to the California Department of Education. Los Angeles Unified School District had the highest number of 12th grade students enrolled in California with 41,316.
According to numbers provided by the National Center for Education Services, California is expected to see a decrease of three percent in public elementary and secondary school enrollment from 2017-2029. The state expected to see the largest drop in enrollment is New Mexico with a projected 12 percent decrease, while Washington D.C. is projected to see a 14 percent increase over the same time period.
The library’s programming includes storytimes for children, book discussions, author talks and take-home craft kits.
“The San Diego Public Library is proud to celebrate Black History Month and to provide yet another way to connect with our residents who may be isolated at home due to the pandemic,” said Misty Jones, library director. “We hope the library programs will encourage patrons to learn more about the achievements of Black Americans and the contributions they have made throughout our country’s history.”
As part of the celebration, the San Diego Public Library will release a Black History Month library card. The special edition card was designed by 15-year-old Scripps Ranch High School student Sahithi Lingampalli and was chosen from dozens submitted by local students. It features the likenesses of congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, Vice President Kamala Harris and tennis great Serena Williams.
“Even though we have endured the segregation and discrimination that we endured, we excelled because we had a hand up,” Joe told NBC 7.
While Joe will be the first to tell you his experience is different than most Black experiences, it wasn’t without challenges. Both he and his wife, Ernestine, were raised in Detroit.
Ernestine went to segregated schools, and Joe lived in and attended school in a predominantly white community where things weren’t always fair in the classroom.
“Gone are the days when my head is bending low I hear the tender voices calling on old black Joe,” said Joe as he recounted a racially insensitive song his grade school teacher taught students.
