City of San Diego Public Library celebrates Black History Month

Events include virtual programs, storytimes, release of special edition library card designed by local student. The City of San Diego Public Library has a full schedule of events this February to celebrate the rich and diverse history of Black Americans. The library’s Black History Month programming includes storytimes for children, book discussions, author talks and take-home craft kits.  “The San Diego Public Library is proud to celebrate Black History Month  and to provide yet another way to connect with our residents who may be isolated at home due to the pandemic,” said Library Director Misty Jones. “We hope the library programs will encourage patrons to learn more about the achievements of Black Americans and the contributions they have made throughout our country’s history.”

February 1, 2021 Several virtual events are planned this month as part of the University of Wyoming’s Black History Month celebration. “The Death of Black Wall Street and the Myth of the American Dream” is the theme of Black History Month, sponsored by UW’s African American and Diaspora Studies (AADS) and the Black Studies Center. Events are free and open to the public. “This year’s theme reckons with the 100th anniversary of one of America’s most catastrophic events,” says Fredrick Douglass Dixon, the Black Studies Center’s director and an assistant professor in the UW School of Culture, Gender and Social Justice. “Each event examines the layered nuances of the economic, political and social impacts of Black Wall Street’s death.”

Benicia Unified School District had 391 10th grade students during 2018-2019 school year, according to the California Department of Education. Los Angeles Unified School District had the highest number of 10th grade students enrolled in California with 46,546. According to numbers provided by the National Center for Education Services, California is expected to see a decrease of three percent in public elementary and secondary school enrollment from 2017-2029. The state expected to see the largest drop in enrollment is New Mexico with a projected 12 percent decrease, while Washington D.C. is projected to see a 14 percent increase over the same time period.
