A man who allegedly shot and killed a Pomona police officer and injured another has been taken into custody following an 15-hour standoff with authorities Saturday.
Elderly man killed in Apple Valley while trying to cross Bear Valley Road

A 70-year-old man was killed when a passing vehicle struck him Easter Sunday as the man attempted to cross Bear Valley Road, east of Apple Valley High School, authorities say.
Deputies from the Apple Valley Sheriff s Station, as well as Apple Valley Fire Protection District personnel, responded at about 8:37 p.m. Sunday to an area of Bear Valley Road east of Quinnault Road after receiving a report of a collision involving a pedestrian and a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze, station officials said.
Deputies determined the 66-year-old man behind the wheel of the Chevy had been traveling westbound on Bear Valley Road when he hit the pedestrian, who died at the scene.

The effects of that local calamity are apparent by the total absence of the many homes that once filled the weed-covered blocks left behind.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the remaining souls now must contend with nearly two years of encroachment by large-to-massive illegal marijuana grows that menacingly dominate the landscape.
