Holly Casner’s plan was to van camp with her two dogs in Big Bear for a few nights between Christmas and New Year s. As a roving professional equine photographer, the 32-year-old had been living and working out of her van for a couple of months, occasionally dropping by Orange County, where she grew up, to be with her mom.

Every year, tens of thousands of people descend on a rough stretch of desert north of Joshua Tree for a weeklong off-roading festival and series of extreme races.
Billed as one of the toughest desert off-roading races in the nation, the King of the Hammers event is often described as part Burning Man and part “Mad Max.”
During the event, Hammertown a temporary city complete with named “streets,” generators, team garages and food and vendor booths rises over a dry lakebed. Hulking, souped-up vehicles traverse the rough terrain of Johnson Valley, an off–highway vehicle riding area run by the federal Bureau of Land Management.
After a nearly year-long investigation, Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Yucca Valley man accused of robbing a convenience store at gun point. Just after 1 a.m. on January 29, 2020, two men entered the Flyer’s gas station convenience store at the corner of Church Street and Highway 62. The men brandished a black semi-automatic handgun and knife at the clerks on duty and demanded cash. After taking money and cigarettes, the two men fled. During the investigation, deputies located evidence related to the robbery and continued to investigate. Earlier this month, detectives developed leads linking Paulix Ramirez, 21, to the armed robbery, and sought a warrant for his arrest. About 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 15, deputies located Ramirez near the intersection of Highway 62 and Old Woman Springs Road. Paulix Ramirez was arrested without incident for investigation of armed robbery, booked into the Morongo Basin Jail, with his bail set at $150,000.
Police previously called to Spring Valley Lake home of 91-year-old who was fatally shot

Law enforcement responded at least twice last year to the Spring Valley Lake home of a 91-year-old disabled woman who was fatally shot by deputies last weekend after she reportedly pointed a shotgun at them.
The February and April 2020 calls occurred when the alarm at the residence went off and were determined to be false alarms, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Jodi Miller told the Daily Press on Tuesday.
Deputies made contact with the woman, Betty Francois, during both calls, Miller added.
District Attorney begins reviewing evidence in fire started by gender reveal party

The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office has started reviewing reports & evidence in the 22,000+ acre El Dorado Fire, which was started by a botched gender reveal party during the 2020 Labor Day weekend.
The fire started on Sept. 5 at the El Dorado Ranch Park in Yucaipa. The fire burned 22,744-acres over 23 days. They lit that device. It produced smoke, which ignited the season grasses that was immediately adjacent. That grass immediately spread across to Yucaipa Ridge and then eventually to Oak Glen, CalFire Capt. Bennet Milloy said.
