It is one of the best of all possible outcomes. On Wednesday evening, the Chautauqua County Legislature sold a piece of property in Silver Creek– a longtime eyesore to Region Nine UAW Housing Corporation of New Brunswick, N.J., for $1.
This has the potential to change a neighborhood and a community.
For far too long, the old Silver Creek school on Main Street has sat vacant while looking sad. Not only is its appearance a problem, there also is a safety factor due to youth in years past attempting to enter the building.
Several plans through the years have been made to restore the building and none have gotten past the planning stage.

It appears an eyesore in the village of Silver Creek is finally going to be addressed.
On Wednesday, the Chautauqua County Legislature voted to sell the old Silver Creek School, located at 60 Main St. for $1 to Region Nine UAW Housing Corporation of New Brunswick, N.J. The sale is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 31, 2023.
According to the resolution, the former school will be renovated into 47 affordable apartments for people 55 and older.
The resolution states the purchase is contingent upon the purchaser receiving necessary tax credits, financing, governmental approvals and permits for the project.
The former school has been empty for decades. It has been vacant since 1978 and has been a long-standing eyesore and safety hazard for the community. Several plans through the years have been made to restore the building. None have gotten past the planning stage.

CHAUTAUQUA The Chautauqua Institution is pushing back against the town of Ellery’s assertion that it shouldn’t be part of the Chautauqua Lake Protection and Rehabilitation Agency board.
In a letter sent to county officials on Monday, Michael Hill, institution president, addressed some of the comments submitted and read aloud during a recent CLPRA meeting. One of the letters read during the meeting came from Arden Johnson, Ellery town supervisor, with a request that Chautauqua Institution no longer have a seat on the CLPRA because it is duplicative and because the institution is outspoken against the use of herbicides on Chautauqua Lake.
